Nutritional Therapy Intro Packages!

I am excited to announce that me, Debbie Potts, will be offering Nutritional Therapy services starting this summer at Fitness Forward Studio in downtown Bellevue, WA.

After 25 years working in the health and fitness industry as a fitness instructor, personal trainer, program manager, run coach, triathlon coach, health coach, podcast host and fitness studio owner… I will now integrate all of my training together to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner by Nutritional Therapy Association and build The WHOLESTIC Method program to our community as well as online.

I will be continuing to host my weekly podcast called “The WHOLE Athlete” to discuss one of the eight elements of The WHOLESTIC Method with guest co-hosts to help transform lives and improve performance for life and sports!  Locally, I will continue to train clients but I will be focusing more on nutritional therapy sessions with clients.

What is Nutritional Therapy?  Nutritional Therapy Association’s Philosophy:  Real Education for people who Believe in Real Food

“That the myriad of health problems that plague modern society result from weaknesses in the body’s physiological foundations as a result of poor nutrition. As an education organization, NTA is dedicated to helping individuals and healthcare professionals understand and reverse the tragic and unsuspected effects of the modern diet on their patients and clients based on their bio-individual nutritional needs. Throughout our training programs and seminars, students access a wide range of education tools and connect nationally with other practitioners in the healing arts.”

We help individuals with different health goals to improve their vitality and energy from the inside out by building their foundations.  The foundations not only focus on eating a properly prepared, nutrient dense  whole foods diet, but also focusing on strengthening the five pillars:

  1. Digestion
  2. Blood Sugar Regulation
  3. Essential Fatty Acid Balance
  4. Mineral Balance
  5. Hydration

My niche varies as I know so many clients don’t feel their best and nutritional therapy can help most everyone!  Most of us can benefit from improving our digestion – and balancing our nervous system (slowing down-pushing pause-reset).  Our digestion system needs to work right or else we don’t absorb our nutrients then we have a cascade of other events and complications that can occur.  How do we get started?  A three-part series of sessions to begin our journey and transformational program.

  1. Client interview, food journal review and Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire Form (NAQ)
  2. Functional Evaluation:  hands on portion of your treatment to tap into the innate intelligence of your body to see where your health priorities are based on the evaluation on reflex points.  We will connect your brain to your body systems – and I will ask you to be energetically open minded so you can receive the messages your body is telling you.  This information we receive from the functional evaluation will be combined with the information we gathered together from our first session as we do some investigation together to find the root causes of your symptoms to help reach your main concerns and goals.  Another part of our functional evaluation is doing lingual neural testing to determine which nutrients your body asking for to heal.  Very exciting and learning experience to listen to our bodies and make that internal connection!
  3. The third session will be our follow-up to create a WHOLE individualized plan based on our interview, NAQ, food journal and functional evaluation.  I will provide a plan including nutrition suggestions, review any supplements the body asked for and re-assess to continue helping you reach your goals.
  4. We also include the option to add on our The WHOLESTIC Method Detox Program including strength training, mobility, myofascial release yoga, Athletic Stretch Therapy, Cauldron healing broth, Pruvit ketone supplement and the Full Spectrum Sunlighten Infrared Sauna.  Ask about our The WHOLESTIC Method Nutritional Therapy packages!

I am also excited to team up with other practitioners and healers to offer seminars and workshops at Fitness Forward Studio to offer more method to help you transform the WHOLE you from the inside out with the elements of The WHOLESTIC Method.Describe how you see yourself using your NTP training in the next year.  Our goal is to slow down the aging process for the maturing athlete at Fitness Forward Studio- that includes detox programs, digestion, leaky gut, joint health, brain health and more educational opportunities to help you take care of your WHOLE health!

New Nutritional Therapy Services include:

  • Treatment for digestive issues as GERD, Leaky Gut and more.
  • Fatigue, Sleep & Stress Management
  • Detoxification Systems
  • Hormone Balance
  • Metabolic Efficiency
  • Athletic Performance
  • and more symptoms we can improve with Nutritional therapy once we go the the process, identify stressors and do some investigation to find the root cause…just like putting the pieces of a puzzle together.

The WHOLESTIC Method approach is unique as Debbie (me!) incorporates the Nutritional Therapy Practitioner skill set along with Metabolic Efficiency coaching and CHEK Holistic Lifestyle coaching skills into one program.  Naturapaths and Functional Medicine Practitioners will be helpful to work as a team with The WHOLESTIC Method as well as Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture treatment.  We are all bio-individuals and sometimes we need to find different approaches to determine which treatment or method helps optimize our health from the inside out.

I know from my years of battling Adrenal Exhaustion/HPA-Axis dysregulation issues, I have seen over ten different health providers until I found a more holistic mind-body approach to help determine what part of my body was causing the cascade of events and imbalances.  Our bodies are similar to a bike wheel- one spoke is out of alignment then the entire wheel is impacted.  You need to find a practitioner that you feel comfortable with, build a trusting relationship and keep communication open as you work together to get the results you are looking for.  We should feel amazing each day- there is no reason to feel low energy, over weight and brain fog just because “we are getting older” or “that is how I am now”… we can find solutions to make you feel ten or more years younger, slow the aging process down and continue doing the sports or activities that you love to do as we age up!  We should feel younger as we get older!

As a health coach, personal trainer and soon to be a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I hope to continue learning about repairing gut health, immune system, detoxification system and the adrenal/HPA Axis function.  We are all multi-tasking and rushing all day long… I want to help others stop living life as a race and start pacing themselves to not only teach the body to burn fat, but also to optimize our health and improve performance in life – and sports!

I know I have learned new information from my body after working with a Nutritional Therapist (NTP) as my stomach acid wasn’t the right Ph to digest my food- proteins, my pancreatic enzymes were not working to help breakdown my carbs, protein and fat- plus my liver/gallbladder were not working correctly to detox the toxins in my body or emulsify the healthy fats I was consuming in my higher fat/lower carbohydrate food plan that I thought was working well for me.  If you can’t breakdown and absorb the nutrients from your food then we have a long chain of events that will occur as a result… a dysfunctional digestion system is related to dysfunctional hormone, adrenal, detox, minerals, fatty acid and more dysfunctional systems!

Remember The WHOLESTIC Method Coaching with Nutritional Therapy is not a quick fix program- but rather a transformational program that will be long-lasting as we will be getting your body to function and operate correctly (efficiently) and build new healthy habits!

Sign up and schedule your intro special to Nutritional Therapy with Debbie Potts here.  See our new client forms on the website www.fitnessforwardstudio.com to get NTP paperwork (steps 1-4) and then return to me (scan or fax) before our first session.  Please take time to complete paperwork- don’t rush through it as it won’t be accurate and as honest.  Take time to answer questions and do your food log with symptoms throughout the day (not at the end of day when you don’t remember details).  Focus and relax when doing the forms for best results!

Is your gut leaking?

You may have heard about leaky gut and a little confused what it means to your health?  Well first of all most people don’t even know they have a leaky gut because they just think their health issues are just a part of aging or they get used to having the problem that they become “normal” for them.  Do you want to slow the aging process and feel your best each day?  Then let’s dig into what is leaky gut and talk about how you can improve your gut health.

What is leaky gut?  Well without getting too deep… the digestion system is a 30 foot tube starting from your mouth and out of your bottom (anus!).  The food that your digestion system breaks down is to stay in the digestive system but we often have food particles that leak through the thin gut wall lining and enter the blood stream.

Think of a castle with the guards surrounding the castle…if anyone escapes from the castle through space between the guards then they would be off into the big unknown world surrounding the private castle.  The invaders create havoc in the environment where they are the enemies.

WebMD defines Leaky Gut as “Intenstinal Permeability.  A possible cause of leaky gut is increased intestinal permeability or intenstinal hyperpermeability. That could happen when tight junctions in the gut, which control what passes through the lining of the small intestine, don’t work properly.  That could let substances leak into the bloodstream.”

Dr.Josh Axe has a great article on how to heal a leaky gut but what are the symptoms if you have a leak in your gut?

I realized I probably had leaky gut from chronic stress in my life (work stress, overloaded schedule, financial and endurance exercise stress).  I also probably has “stress” from too much coffee and intermittent fasting while training for Ironman triathlons and marathons.  Adrenal Fatigue or exhaustion is a symptom of leaky gut and that was my issue after visisting tons of doctors and practitioners in the area and online.  You need to do your own research to find a doctor who is also trained in nutrition or a functional medicine doctor or Naturapath…someone who will dig deep to researching your symptoms, correct lab work then the correct treatment to treat the root cause with what I call the “WHOLESTIC Method” to healing from the inside out.  You can’t just take medication or supplements to heal your gut.  Your gut has a leak for a reason…find out your reason.image

More and more people (including my clients) are sharing struggles with their health and their symptoms related to a leaky gut as well as other auto-immune challenges.  Our increasingly stressed personalities, over dependence on processed factory made food, antibiotics and other medications as well as lack of sleep and overscheduled lives are contributing to the increasing problems of our gut health  Some practitioners believe “all disease begins in the gut” (Hippocrates).

Click here to read more on Dr. Axe’s “Four Steps to Heal a Leaky Gut

Symptoms of a leaky gut:

  • Bloated belly
  • Sensitivities to certain foods
  • Thyroid issues
  • Fatigue
  • Joint Pain
  • Headaches
  • Skin issues as psoarisis, rosacia or acne
  • Problems with digestive system
  • Weight gain
  • Syndrome X

Leaky Gut affects the entire body:

What happens when the gut wall lining is broken and undigested food leaks out the holes?  These food particles should not be entering into the bloodstream so the body is going to react by causing inflammation throughout the body inside and out.

  • Skin
    • Acne
    • Rosacea
    • Eczema
    • Psoriasis
  • Thyroid
    • Hashimotos
    • Hypothryroidism
    • Graves
  • Colon
    • Constipation
    • Diarrhea
    • IBD
  • Adrenals
    • Fatigue
  • Joints
    • Rheumatoid Arthritis
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Headaches
  • Sinus and Mouth
    • Frequent colds
    • Food sensitivities
  • Brain
    • depression
    • anxiety
    • ADHD

How should you heal a leaky gut?  How do we fill the gut wall lining up so we don’t have any holes or leaks in the bucket or rather the very thin delicate gut wall lining?  Let’s look at how to treat the gut in our next blog!  For now check out…http://draxe.com/4-steps-to-heal-leaky-gut-and-autoimmune-disease/

Shut the Front Door! Health & Fitness Podcast

My mission and my journey…

Debbie Potts Journey…

I have been in the fitness industry as a personal trainer, instructor and triathlon/run coach for over twenty years but I have also struggled with my body weight and health even though I am a competitive endurance athlete completing many marathons, 50k trail run races, cycling events and long distance triathlons.

After being in the fitness industry since I was in college, I started to see a pattern with not only myself but many clients struggling to lose weight and get healthier even though they exercised consistently. I was not able to help clients by just training them one to three times a week.  I started to think outside of the box and get curious why we are told certain guidelines and rules to lose weight, reduce risk for heart disease and diabetes.  What we were being told didn’t make sense to me as a trainer, coach or athlete.  How do I burn fat when I exercise and train when I am supposed to eat every few hours?  Why do I feel hungry after I ate a banana, orange juice and oatmeal?

Over the years I started to read up on the Zone diet and then later the Paleo diet. My journey began to what I label now as “WHOLESTIC Method” approach with eight elements to improve fat loss, health and performance.  I started to do my own research and listening to podcasts with people as Sean Croxten’s, Ben Greenfield and Jimmy Moore.  In 2012, I started the “Superhuman Coach” certification program with Ben Greenfield and continued my education in metabolic efficiency and low-carb eating.

IMG_0157

As my journey began on the nutrition and health side of a coach, I was becoming a competitive age group triathlete (Ironman distance) since 2001, marathoner and long distance cycling events. I loved training and racing endurance events.  I also opened up my own boutique fitness studio in 2010.  As I was learning about adrenal exhaustion, heart rate variability and leaky gut… I soon found myself feeling and experiencing many of the red flags for stage three adrenal fatigue in 2012.  After competing and setting my best times at Ironman Canada then 70.3 world championships then Ironman Hawaii for my fifth time followed by another marathon then a 50k trail race while running my own fitness business with crazy hours…my body from the inside out was exhausted.  Hormones were plummeting, my weight sky rocketed and my body could not take any sugar including fruit without getting a headache in five seconds.

After being the best shape in my life in the summer and fall of 2012, my health, body weight and fitness level drastically changed around March 2013. I started to feel fatigue during a workout to the point that I stopped in a bike ride.  My heart rate was a lot higher than normal and then my body composition changed… I gained over 30 pounds by the end of June (I remember the morning I weighed myself at a house we rented for clients doing Ironman Couer D’Alene).

When you gain so much weight so quickly from being very lean and fit… it definitely leads to depression, low self-esteem and confidence. I was embarrassed on my weight gain as I was this top notch athlete who suddenly gained a noticeably amount of weight.  I felt people thought I was overeating and not exercising…the stereotype of why we gain weight.  Actually at the time of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue, I was doing “Bulletproof coffee” each morning during work then I would eat a large healthy lunch in the afternoon and skip dinner as I was trying to “intermittent fast” for 15 hours…what not to do when your adrenals are overworked and broken.

My journey from metabolic efficiency, low carb eating and how to coach clients to become fat burning machines shifted to how to recover from Adrenal Exhaustion. I was living and operating daily for a few years with adrenal fatigue.  At the same time of co-hosting a podcast “FIT FAT FAST”, I started sharing my story and challenges I was dealing with to our listeners as well as writing about my research findings on Adrenal Fatigue.  I was not the only one struggling.  Friends would suggest taking an anxiety pill or got get my liver and gallbladder checked.  Traditional medicine doesn’t look at the root cause… why was all of this happening to me?

Debbie IMC 2012Many listeners and clients could relate to my story…being tired but wired all day, wide awake at 2am, muscle fatigue during workouts, depressed, rapid weight gain, bloated belly and skin rash. I searched for a practitioner to help me but I went to six doctors before I found help with the Kalish Method and another local naturopath.  In 2014, I became a certified CHEK Institute Holistic Lifestyle Coach level one and plan to continue to level three.  In 2014, I also started my own podcast to expand the topics from metabolic efficiency and low carb living to the “SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!” health and fitness topics in order to cover fueling, training and performance tricks that we don’t hear in the mainstream media.

What I experienced was common among so many clients and friends…endurance athletes from burning the candle at both ends as well as busy parents trying to do too much in the day. Adrenal fatigue or exhaustion is a common battle but undetected.  Most doctors do not do the lab testing and treatment plans necessary to help individuals with symptoms of adrenal fatigue.

My recovery has taken almost three years to heal my adrenals and hormonal system.  What I have learned for myself is what I help clients with now for fat loss, health and performance with my “WHOLESTIC Method”.  We need to start from the inside out to heal our body.  Make a shift in your lifestyle, mindset and habits if you want to heal from adrenal exhaustion, hormonal imbalance, thyroid and more areas by working with a practitioner or HLC coach that you connect with.  Join my mission to take care of ourselves from the inside out.

Find the root cause…not just treat the symptoms

We have been trained to go to the doctor when we have a stomach bug, headache, IBS, skin rashes and more.  We leave the doctor’s office with a feeling of satisfaction…we are going to make some progress and start healing.  Then we begin taking the medication or treatment plan from the doctors (usually a medication) to treat our symptoms.  The problems may go away but often returns again in one form or the other.

Don’t you want to investigate and get to the root cause to determine why you keep getting headaches or bloated belly or skin rash on your arms?  80x80 (1)

Traditional medicine helps treat our symptoms but we should try mixing in some non-traditional alternative methods to healing.  We should work with someone that is going to help us investigate our list of symptoms then dig deeper to research for the root cause.  A functional medicine doctor or a naturapath can help provide a different viewpoint on what your symptoms are coming from and help find the root cause with a serious of questions and specific lab work.image

Next time you have gut issues or skin issues maybe switch up going to renew your prescription or pick up the over the counter medication.  Try getting consulting with a naturapath or another practitioner who has to goal to figure out where the problem is starting from…often it is related to our gut health, stress and nutrition.  Fitness Forward 3 (2)Try treating your body with the WHOLESTIC method to improve your health from the inside out.  Look at the whole picture to improve your fat loss, health and performance.  You don’t have to suffer for years… you may just need to change your diet and get the right supplements after the appropriate lab tests.

Ask if you would like some contacts as Christopher Kelly at Nourish Balance Thrive or a Kalish Method practitioner.

To Detox or Reset?

21 Day Sugar Detox or 21 Day Reset?

How many people do you know who try a diet or a new eating plan as going “Paleo” or “Gluten Free” then return to old eating habits a week later or less?

Our society is always on a mission to look and feel amazing by losing weight so then we go on a new diet, lose weight, feel great then lose our discipline then return to old eating habits. We are always in this weight loss-weight gain cycle.  Why do we do this to ourselves?

As a coach, trainer, podcaster and competitive athlete for over twenty years, I understand the struggle and the challenge of sticking with a new eating plan and setting up restrictions. What is sugar detox anyways?  Why do we need to be on a diet?

A typical sugar detox program involves a food elimination plan to focus on eating real food as vegetables, healthy fats and quality animal protein. The goal is to learn how to eat real food that is not factory made or filled with processed foods and excess sugar.  We should be aware by now that sugar is evil…it is an addictive as any drugs but how do we get off the blood sugar roller coaster?image

Ideally we want to become fat burning machines and not being sugar burners. How do we break the addiction to sugar?

For starters we do a new eating plan but eliminate the mindset of a “DIET” or “DETOX”. Instead of focusing on what you can’t eat…focus on what you can eat, cook and enjoy!   When we choose to a “detox” or “Paleo” plan we are really eliminating foods that cause spikes to our blood sugar (insulin-fat storage hormones) and foods that cause inflammation in our bodies.  What we do want to eat is food without labels or an ingredient list that you can’t understand, read or pronounce.  That leaves us with food our bodies were designed to eat…healthy organic colorful vegetables, healthy satisfying fats, quality source free range grass fed meet and pasture eggs.  Load up on real food with healthy filling fats and you will full for hours, lose the cravings for overeating and stop spiking your blood sugar levels.

But how do we stick with a new eating plan? What if we tried a new way of eating and preparing food but quit in a week?  Then we need to dig a little deeper.  I call this the WHOLESTIC Approach to improving fat loss, health and performance.  Changing our eating habits for a 21 day sugar detox may not be the ONLY solution to losing weight and getting healthy.

Let’s look at WHOLE picture why you are struggling with sugar and why you are overeating…

Are you operate with high levels of stress each day and anxiety?

1.  Do you enjoy your work and workplace?

2.  How is your quality of sleep each night?

3.  Do you exercise and move each day?

4.  Do you do strength training with cardio intervals?

5.  How is your gut health? Bloated belly? Poop color check.  Digestion issues?

6.  Are you drinking water each day? Half your body weight in ounces per day?

7.  Do you feel happy and live for each day rather than waiting for the weekend on Monday?

If you are struggling to lose weight and feel great then perhaps you need not only to do a 21 day sugar detox but look at doing a “21 Day Reset” program. Let’s not diet or detox… but reset your body and mind by working from the inside out.  Work on the WHOLE person with the WHOLESTIC Approach to become a fat burning machine and say goodbye to the blood sugar roller coaster in 2016!  We want to work from the inside out and find the root cause to our challenges, struggles or symptoms.  Let’s determine the root cause and work on your areas of opportunities to improve fat loss, health and performance… or mort important just feel amazing and energetic from the inside out with my “WHOLESTIC Method”.
